???In the beginning of this year, Burger King announced it was testing delivery service in the Washington, D.C., area.
The service has since been incorporated into a total of 16 restaurants in Virginia and Maryland. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Burger King already has a delivery service in place in various markets around the globe and, according to a spokesperson, the company is happy with the preliminary results in its U.S. market test.
The company has not made a decision to rollout the service nationally. However, the company's BK Delivery Twitter site (@BKdelivery), which has nearly 50,000 followers, has indicated to inquiring fans that the service "will be expanding soon."
If that does happen, BK Delivery already has a solid online infrastructure in place. In addition to the Twitter page, Burger King also has launched a website (bkdelivers.com) and a Facebook page devoted entirely to the service.
Since it's currently in market test, Burger King representatives won't comment further on why the company decided to launch a separate social media effort for the limited delivery markets.
The company is soliciting feedback (using the hashtag #BKFeedback) through these sites, asking followers and fans to share their experiences with the delivery service.
Judging by the comments on the Facebook and Twitter pages, customers in these test markets seem satisfied with the delivery service.
"Burger King is really stepping up their game," Tweeted one follower.
"Life is complete," wrote another.
A Facebook fan posted "Thanks for the delivery yesterday. The customer service was excellent as well."
Burger King also is getting requests from customers throughout the country asking it to deliver in their markets. The company has responded to each one individually, both on Facebook and Twitter, saying it's working on expansion as well as: "We're trying to expand as fast as possible!"
The delivery option entails a minimum order of $8 to $10, depending on the market. Deliveries cost $2 and customers must be located within a 10-minute drive of the restaurant. Burger King says the food is available in 30 minutes or less.
The restaurants in test have added delivery-friendly menu options such as 40-piece chicken tenders and two bottled drinks for $10, and four large sandwich combos for $23.99. There also is an order of any two large sandwich combos and two regular sandwich combos; and 10 cheeseburgers with a 20-piece chicken tender.
Food is delivered in specifically designed packaging to keep burgers hot, lettuce cool and fries crisp.
Burger King has added the slogan: "You bet your sweet Whopper dinner will arrive hot & fresh" to its delivery-specific sites.
